American Bald Eagles have suffered from excessive hunting and pollution over the last decades. Hunting eagles was once a popular sport. Both land and water pollution has contributed to the population decline of these birds. For instance, the use of pesticides such as DDT is the greatest threat to the species, since they are found in fish, which is the major food source for American Bald Eagles.
American Bald Eagles are making a steady recovery nowadays. These birds are found in abundance in Canada and Alaska. In order to increase the population of these birds, some states support effective nest monitoring and programs dealing with releasing young birds into the wild. Federal protection is very important and involves programs improving protection, setting up captive breeding programs, establishing a wide-ranging public information program, and more activities.
Public awareness of the problem, such as the preservation of the American Bald Eagle's habitat, and support for environmental conservation projects is likely to assure a healthy and secure future for the national bird of the United States of America.

American Bald Eagles were extremely abundant along the coast of Maine.
