American Bald Eagles Pictures - Reproduction
American Bald eagles mate for life and build their huge nests in the tops of large trees near rivers, lakes, and marshes. The birds may re-use their nests year after year. Bald eagles normally lay two to three eggs once a year. The eggs normally hatch after about 35 days.
The nests are built of sticks. One nest can weigh up to two tons. Females lay a clutch of one to three eggs. Incubation period lasts from five to six weeks. Eagles are territorial during nesting season. They do their best to keep other eagles out of their nesting area. The American Bald Eagle's nesting territory is usually one to two square miles.
The mating season of American Bald Eagle varies greatly by region. For instance, in the South the breeding season may last from late September through November. In
the Mountain West, it may last from January through March.
Courting behavior begins in early April and involves spectacular aerial displays. Soaring above, they dive and interlock talons. During the care period, the male does most of the hunting. American Bald Eagles migrate in winter and often
they roost and hunt in groups along waterways that do not freeze and have food for them in abundance. The female does the majority of the feeding and brooding. Sometimes, the male gives the female a break at the nest. Nevertheless, only ten percent of young American Bald Eagles survive to adulthood.
